Big Second-Half Run Carries Rams Past Fort Lewis

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – For the second straight year, Angelo State will play for a spot in the Elite Eight tournament.

The third-seeded Rams got double-figure scoring from all five starters, including 25 from Quay King to upset No. 2 Fort Lewis Sunday night, 87-66 in South Central Regional at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.

ASU (25-6) will face the winner of Tarleton State/Lubbock Christian on Tuesday night. Last year, the Rams were knocked out by Tarleton State in Stephenville, but this season will get the chance to win the regional on a neutral site.

The season ends for Fort Lewis, snapping its 16-game winning streak to wrap up the year with a 28-4 record.

The game changed dramatically in a span of six minutes, starting with the final minute of the first half and the first five of the second. The Rams trailed 40-31 before Tre Bennett canned a 3-pointer, his first points of the game, to cut the Skyhawks' lead to six at the break.  In the second half, the Rams made their first seven shots from the floor, and used a 19-3 run to take control of the game.

Fort Lewis managed to claw back to within six with 3:39 to play at 69-63, but the Rams kept hitting clutch baskets. King drilled another corner 3-pointer to ignite an 11-0 run for ASU, which then cruised to the 22-point win.

King made seven of nine 3-point attempts, including five triples in the second half. He got plenty of scoring help from Stedman Allen, who had 17, while Omari Gudul had a double-double with 13 points and 10 boards. Prince Foster added 13 points and Tre Bennett had 12 and six assists. Bennett took care of the ball better Sunday, with just three assists after committing 10 in Saturday's first-round win.

The Skyhawks got 13 from Joshua Blaylock, who played the entire 40 minutes, but missed 11 of his 15 field-goal attempts. Kody Salcido scored 13 points and grabbed 10 rebounds off the bench, while Rasmus Bach scored 10.
