THE RUNDOWN

LA JOLLA, Calif. – A trio of second half goals carried No. 11 Midwestern State to its sixth NCAA quarterfinal appearance in program history with a 3-2 come-from-behind victory over No. 7 St. Edward's Friday evening in the South Central Region final at Triton Soccer Stadium.

No. 2 seed Midwestern State (18-3-1) erased a 1-0 halftime deficit following a strike from junior midfielder Pierre Bocquet in the 56th minute before goals for senior forward Christian Okeke and senior midfielder Flavio Guzman lifted the Mustangs to a 3-1 advantage with Guzman's game winner coming in the 73rd minute.

The Mustangs defeated top-seeded St. Edward's (18-3-1) for the second time this season and avenged a 2-0 loss in the Heartland Conference Tournament Championship two weeks ago at MSU Soccer Field. Midwestern State moves on to face West Region champion and host UC San Diego in the Mustangs first national quarterfinal appearance since 2010 Sunday at 2 p.m. at Triton Soccer Stadium. The No. 2 seed Tritons defeated No. 5 Cal Poly Pomona 1-0 in overtime Friday.

The Hilltoppers lit up the scoreboard first in the 34th minute as Dylan Armstrong netted the first of his two goals in the game with a shot into the upper left corner of the net to give SEU the early edge.

In the 56th minute, a Guzman corner kick found Bocquet in the box for a header goal to even the contest up at 1-1.

Okeke recorded the go-ahead score in the 66th minute off a pass from senior midfielder Gabriel Cavalcante into the upper left corner of the net for a 2-1 MSU advantage with his team-leading ninth goal of the season.

Guzman pushed the MSU lead to 3-1 less than eight minutes later with a shot into the bottom right side of the net following a pass from freshman midfielder Ross Fitzpatrick.

Armstrong cut the SEU deficit in half in the 78th minute with his second goal of the game but the Hilltoppers were unable to complete a comeback with only one shot attempt in the final 10 minutes of play.
