Mustangs win slugfest at Colorado Mesa in OT, 16-13

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. — Senior Andy Alkhazshvilly's 28-yard field goal in overtime lifted Midwestern State to a 16-13 win over Colorado Mesa Saturday night Stocker Stadium.

It was third successful field goal of the night for Alkhazshvilly as the Mustangs escaped with a perfect 2-0 record despite not scoring an offensive touchdown.

Midwestern leads off the Lone Star Football Festival by taking on Eastern New Mexico Saturday at AT&T Stadium in Arlington. Kickoff is set for 11:30 a.m.

Senior safety Tari Jones scored the lone touchdown of the game for the Mustangs scooping up a fumble on a bad punt snap and racing 30 yards for a touchdown with just under 7 minutes to play in the second quarter to stake MSU to a 10-0 lead.

It was also Jones who produced the MSU fourth takeaway of the game intercepting Aric Kaiser's pass on the 2-yard line on the opening possession of overtime.

The Mustangs rushed the ball seven consecutive times to push the ball to the Colorado Mesa 11-yard line before Alkhazshvilly booted the game winner through the uprights from 28 yards out.

Colorado Mesa, who finished game with 362 yards of total offense on 91 plays, rallied to tie the game at 10-10 after junior defensive back Salim Cleghorne intercepted a Hagen Hutchinson pass at the CMU 4-yard line.

The Mavericks used 14 plays in 5:22 to march 96 yards to the game tying 28-yard strike from Kaiser to Marcus Hines with 4:10 to play in the third quarter.

Junior quarterback Quade Coward provided a spark for MSU in the fourth quarter connecting on a pair of strikes to Derek Lockhart (23, 12) before the Mustangs settled on a 30-yard field goal from Alkhazshvilly for a 13-10 lead with 3:23 to play.

But Colorado Mesa answered with a 16-yard, 65-yard drive before sending the game to overtime on a 23-yard field goal by Ryan Sheehan with 25 seconds left in regulation.

MSU senior linebacker Daniel Laudermilk spearheaded a stellar defensive effort with a career-high 18 tackles, while Marqui Christian, Dominique Rouse and Adam Hill made eight stops each.

Colorado Mesa fell to 1-1 on the season.
