Mustangs roll into LSC finals with 5-0 win over Tarleton State

LAWTON, Okla. — Midwestern State cruised into the Lone Star Conference Championship finals with a 5-0 win over Tarleton State Friday afternoon at the Streich-Henry Family Tennis Center.

The Mustangs face the winner of this afternoon's semifinal match between Cameron and Texas A&M-Kingsville Saturday morning at 10 a.m.

MSU claimed its eighth consecutive win over NCAA Division II competition moving to 15-6 on the season.

Senior Taylor Coffman combined with junior Kayla Casey for an 8-1 win over Ashleigh Edward and Luiza Ferraro-Adas at No. 1 doubles while junior Maddie Schorlemmer and sophomore Paige Boykin pushed the lead to 2-0 with an 8-2 win over Erika Richard and Ariadna Cabezas-Mart at the No. 3 position.

Junior Lauren Pineda and Lindsay Nochowicz completed the doubles sweep by taking an 8-0 decision over Gabriella Jansson and Ellie Stevens at No. 3.

Midwestern wasted no time clinching the match as freshman Carrie Casey blasted Cabezas-Mart 6-1, 6-0 at No. 6 singles followed shortly by Boykin's 6-0, 6-1 win over Jansson at No. 5.

The Mustangs controlled an advantage in three of the final four singles' contests when the match was pulled.

Coffman led Edward 6-4, 1-0 at No. 2, Schorlemmer was up 6-4, 2-1 at No. 3 and sophomore Courtney Anderson led 6-4, 1-0 at No. 4.

Tarleton's Erika Richard took the first set 6-2 over Kayla Casey at No. 1, but Casey was up 3-2 in the second frame.

Tarleton State ends the season with a 6-9 record.

NOTES

- Midwestern State improved to 12-4 against regionally ranked opposition, while moving to 10-1 against South Central Region teams.
- Freshman Carrie Casey claimed her fifth-straight singles win to improve to 6-1 on the season.
- Sophomore Paige Boykin extended her winning streak over NCAA Division II competition to 10 games. She boasts a 16-2 overall mark against D2 opponents this season.
- Junior Maddie Schorlemmer and Boykin extended their doubles winning streak to 10 matches while improving to 16-4 as a tandem in 2015.
- Schorlemmer claimed her 70th career dual win.
