WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Midwestern State's
Monzaigo Williams earned Daktronics second-team All-South Central Region honors Thursday as released the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
The senior point guard from Palmdale, Calif. led the Mustangs to a 22-7 record while claiming their third consecutive Lone Star Confernece championship.
Williams, a first-team All-LSC selection, averaged a team-high 15.9 points per game while dishing out 4.4 assists and pulling down 3.4 rebounds per game.
He poured in 20-or-more points in five games this season including a campaign-best 31-point outburst with six 3-pointers in an 78-71 win over Northwest Missouri State, then went 11-for-14 with five treys to finish with 27 points in a 76-70 win over West Texas A&M.
Williams boasts a 47.2 field goal percentage while connecting at 42.6 percent clip from the 3-point arc. He has posted at least five assists in 16 games this season while notching his lone double-double of the season with 17 points and 10 assists at Texas A&M-Commerce.
He was named to the LSC Postseason All-Tournament Team after averaging 14 points, 5.7 rebounds and 3.3 assists last weekend in Allen.
Metropolitan's State's Brandon Jefferson was named South Central Region Player of the Year leading the top-ranked Roadrunners scoring 20.9 points per game while shooting 47.9 percent from the field and 48.9 percent from the 3-point arc.
Jefferson is joined on the first team by Tarleton State senior guard Chuck Guy (15.9 points, 6.1 assists), Fort Lewis junior center Alex Herrera (18.9 points, 9.2 rebounds), Angelo State senior forward Kenny Williams (17.2 points, 8.0 rebounds) and Colorado-Colorado Springs sophomore guard Derrick White (22.3 points, 6.4 rebounds, 4.2 assists).
Joining Williams on the second team are Tarleton State senior guard De'Andre Upchurch (17.3 points, 3.3 rebounds), Metro State junior guard Mitch McCarron (16.0 points, 7.3 rebounds), Arkansas-Fort Smith senior guard Jake Toupal (14.3 points, 3.8 rebounds) and Colorado Mines senior center Trevor Wages (13.6 points, 9.4 rebounds).
Midwestern State opens NCAA Division II postseason play against Arkansas-Fort Smith Saturday afternoon at the Auraria Event Center in Denver. Tipoff is set for 1 p.m. (Central Time).
