About the Mustangs

Midwestern State has turned up the defense and stifled two of the best point guard NCAA Division II has to offer in the opening two rounds of the South Central Region.

The Mustangs limited All-LSC South performer Corin Henry to 11 points on a 3-of-12 shooting night in a 64-51 win over Tarleton State in Friday's opening round before putting the blinkers on Daktronics South Central Region Player of the Year Skyler Bowlin of Missouri Southern.

Bowlin made just one field goal in each half and connected on just 2-of-14 shots to finish with five points as Midwestern routed the Lions 75-52 Sunday night at Hamilton Fieldhouse.

The Mustangs have limited the opposition to a sluggish 31.9 percent from the field during its two games of the regionals holding its two opponents to a combined 45 points below their regular season scoring averages.

Senior guard Chris Hagan was held to fewer than 20 points for the first time in four games, but still managed 18 points Sunday against Missouri Southern, while junior guard Michael Loyd matched a season high with 25 points against the Lions.

Midwestern is shooting 41.3 percent from the field as a team and hitting on a very respectable 69.2 percent of its charity tosses.

AGAINST THE BRONCHOS (1/8/11)    Chris Hagan and Michael Loyd combined for 32 points in Midwestern State's 68-61 crossover loss to Central Oklahoma.

Hagan tallied 18 points on 4-of-11 shooting including a perfect 10-for-10 effort from the charity stripe. He added six assists, three rebounds, two steals and a blocked shot in 32 minutes.

Loyd scored nine of his 14 points in the second half including a pair of 3-pointers in the closing minutes before fouling with 1:25 to play.

The Mustangs were outboarded 43-34.

About the Bronchos

Central Oklahoma comes into the South Central Region championship game on an absolute roll.

The Bronchos have won their last nine games and 20 of their last 21, but have to fight tooth and nail to escape Texas A&M International and Fort Hays State last weekend.

UCO surrendered a 17-point second half lead against Texas A&M International and survived on a whistle as Jarrod McDaniel converted a three-point play with 6 seconds remaining in regulation. The Bronchos would put away the Dustdevils 79-70 in overtime.

Central Oklahoma appeared to be in the driver's seat when Tyler Phillips nailed a trey to give the Bronchos a 22-point bulge with 13:39 to play Sunday night against Fort Hays State.

But a little over 9 minutes later, the Tigers knotted the game at 66-66 with 4:30 to play.

The Bronchos recovered to outscore FHSU 13-1 over the final 3:34 to move on by an 81-69 margin.

Senior guard Dauntae Williams is the clear leader of the Bronchos. The All-America candidate works a stat line of 21.1 points, 6.5 rebounds and 3.8 assists per game. Williams has led UCO in scoring in 24 of its 33 games.

Junior guards Brent Friday (10.8 points, 4.8 rebounds), Tyler Phillips (10.6 points, 4.4 rebounds) and Shane Carroll (9.9 points, 2.7 rebounds) are the Bronchos other top scoring options.

Central Oklahoma chunks up 26 3-point attempts a game while averaging 81.2 points a game as a team.

The Bronchos own a 25-game home court winning streak at Hamilton Fieldhouse where they are 16-0 this season.

AGAINST THE MUSTANGS (1/8/11)   Senior guard Dauntae Williams delivered a big performance of 24 points and 15 rebounds as Central Oklahoma only scorer in double figures as the Bronchos came away with a 68-61 LSC crossover win at Hamilton Fieldhouse.

Jarrod McDaniel, a 46.3 percent free throw shooter, salted the game away by hitting 7-of-8 free throws in the final 2:36 to salt away the 5-point win.

Ironically, McDaniel finished a traditional three-point play with 8 seconds remaining to send the Bronchos into overtime with Texas A&M International in the opening round of the South Central Regional Saturday night.
