Saints waive Tanner

NEW ORLEANS - The defending Super Bowl champion New Orleans Saints waived former Midwestern State standout Andy Tanner Tuesday afternoon to pare the roster to the required 75-man limit.

Tanner, who signed as an undrafted free agent this spring, enjoyed a breakout senior campaign while helping the Mustangs to their first Lone Star Conference championship and a trip to the NCAA Division II playoffs in 2009.

The Rockwall product earned D2Football.com and Don Hansen Football Gazette All-America honors after setting rewriting MSU's single-season receiving record book with 75 receptions for 1,186 yards and 12 touchdowns last season.

Tanner has two younger brothers currently on the MSU roster including sophomore wideout Matt Tanner and freshman linebacker David Tanner.

The Mustangs open the season Thursday night at New Mexico Highlands. Kickoff is set for 8 p.m. (Central Time) from Perkins Stadium.
