Midwestern State boasts eighth-best attendance in NCAA II

WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Midwestern State completed its successful run through the Lone Star Conference and the NCAA Division II's South Central Region with its first trip to the Elite Eight.

That success bolstered by consecutive sellouts at the 2010 South Central Regionals at D.L. Ligon Coliseum resulted in great fan support throughout the Wichita Falls and North Texas Area as the Mustangs boasted the eighth-best attendance in all of NCAA Division II.

"My excitement for our local support is two-fold," MSU coach Grant McCasland said. "They have an understanding of basketball and that is tough to find in a state dominated by football. To have that is a blessing, and on top of that, they are excited about MSU basketball."

MSU supporters spun the Ligon Coliseum turnstiles 38,805 times for an average of 2,425 fans over 16 home dates to outdraw Lone Star Conference foes by a substantial rate as Tarleton State, 30th in NCAA Division II with a 1,516 average, was the next best draw.

"Our fans truly made a difference this season," McCasland said.

The Mustangs extended their home court winning streak to 29 games after completing their seventh undefeated season under the dome with a 16-0 mark.

Midwestern drew more than 3,000 fans on seven dates including sellouts in each of the sessions of the South Central Regional featuring the home standing Mustangs.

MSU would have also been second in the NCAA Division I Southland Conference in attendance trailing only Lamar (2,970), but outdrawing other top schools Stephen F. Austin (2,419), UTSA (1,553), Sam Houston State (1,434) and UTA (756).

The Mustangs also eclipsed the Conference USA's Rice Owls (1,996) and compared favorably to other regional NCAA Division I one programs falling just behind SMU (2,668) and North Texas (2,716).

A limited number of reserved seats remain for the 2010-11 season and maybe reserved by calling the MSU Athletics Office at 397-4044.
